Sonoma County dive teams found the body of a 29-year-old San Francisco gay man in the Russian River at Guerneville on Aug. 20, 2018.
The body of 29-year-old San Francisco man who had gone missing in Guerneville over the weekend was found in the Russian River Monday morning, and Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office investigators are trying to determine if he drowned accidentally.
The man, whose name was not released, was vacationing in a rental home with his ex-husband and some friends, and when he failed to show up for dinner Sunday they called 911 at around 8:40 p.m., police said.
The missing man’s sandals and t-shirt were found on nearby dock overlooking the river, and it was near that dock that search and rescue dive teams discovered his body Monday at about 11 a.m.
The body was found in about 12 to 15 feet of water.

As I’m sure you know, even though we live in a fairly progressive county, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure our LGBTQ community members are getting the resources, support, and respect we deserve. We are currently working on a policy map to identify all the areas in Sonoma County where things could be better for LGBTQ people. As we move forward with this project over the next three years, we are looking to build a task force here in Sonoma County of community members, program leaders, advocates, youth, and anyone else who is looking to get involved. The commitment isn’t huge, join us for six task force phone calls per year and a willingness to show up and take action when the time is right.
To kick things off, we are having an in-person meeting on Friday, August 31st from 11am-4pm at Positive Images in Santa Rosa. Our task force leaders from Sacramento will be facilitating most of the meeting, and it should be a great jumping off point if you are interested in learning more and getting involved. The details of the day are covered below. If you can only join us for part of the day, no worries! The most important portion will be the Task Force meeting from 2-4 pm. The advocacy workshop in the morning will also be offered as a webinar starting on August 21st. If you’d like more information on the webinar just let me know and I’ll send it your way.
We are really hoping to bring together an action-oriented, change-making, group of champions and hope you’ll consider being a part of it! Please get in touch with any questions. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Based on the doodle poll, our in-person meeting will be on Friday August 31st. Please RSVP and share the invitation far and wide. Anyone interested in LGBTQ mental health equity is definitely invited to attend.
#Out4MentalHealth is a statewide project that engages LGBTQ people throughout California to develop a mental health equity agenda and offer tools and resources that address these disparities and make our shared goals a reality.

A man ignited a bomb under a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office patrol car Friday morning to injure one person, authorities said.
Shortly before noon Friday, the deputy parked his car in the parking lot of the Safeway in Guerneville and walked inside before a loud explosion “rattled the windows” of the grocery store, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy rushed out and witnesses pointed at a man running through the parking lot, authorities said. The suspect was taken into custody after being tackled by an off-duty police officer.
Witnesses allegedly saw the man throwing items under the deputy’s patrol car prior to the loud explosion. One Safeway employee near the explosion suffered minor injuries.
She was treated at the scene and was able to return to work, authorities said.
At the time of his arrest, the suspect was allegedly holding a backpack that containing more explosive devices, leading deputies to evacuate the Safeway and surrounding area.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad “neutralized” the backpack, authorities said.
The Safeway parking lot remained closed while the Sheriff’s bomb dog swept for more explosives. Deputies also investigated the suspect’s car for further explosives.
The Safeway store reopened for business, but with limited access, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s office said they are not releasing the suspect’s name at this time but he is believed to be a Sonoma County man.
Instructor Tina Dungan will offer a free class ‘LGBTQI History: A Sonoma County Timeline 1960s – 1990’ at Santa Rosa Junior College Wednesday afternoons August 8 through December 19. You may sign up for the class by contacting the Older Adults Program at 707-527-4533 or by registering at older-adults.santarosa.edu. There is no age limit, but the class is designed for seniors.
The Sonoma County LGBTQI Timeline was created for and displayed at the Sonoma County PRIDE celebration this past June. Always a work in progress, it represents a start at recording our multi-faceted history.
“Using a discussion group format, we will explore community building, culture and social change as it occurred during a very transformative period in this county as well as in the rest of the country: the late 1960s – 1990,” Ms Dugan said.
Class discussion will revolve around memories evoked by the timeline stories, responses to presentations and topics from readings. We will also consider how we might apply what we have learned from this history in order to continue to create social change as the need arises in our current and/or future communities.
Although our starting point will be the Sonoma County LGBTQI Timeline, discussion will be oriented toward topics and ideasbehind and inspired by the stories from the Timeline. No matter where you have lived, those ideas and stories will be meaningful and pertinent to the extent that they capture or allude to the historical spirit of the LGBTQI movement across this country.
