Heat May Overtax Power Supply so Conserve Today
California’s power grid operator is asking residents to conserve electricity Thursday evening, when a surge of air conditioning use amid sweltering temperatures could overtax the state’s power supply.
The statewide Flex Alert, a public appeal for power conservation, will start at 3 p.m. Thursday and last until 10 p.m., the California Independent System Operator said.
Temperatures in the mid-90s to low 100s are expected Thursday in the North Bay and extreme heat is also forecast for parts of Southern California.
If power levels drop too low, the operator may issue rolling power outages, as was done in mid-August, when record-breaking heat drove up energy use.
Californians are urged to turn off lights, unplug unused devices and avoid using large appliances during the Flex Alert period, the power operator said.

Topical Thursdays12:30 to 2 pm September 3: Nancy Flaxman facilitates. Work:As Labor Day approaches, we will talk about work. Most of us are retired, though some are still working. What role has work played in your life? Did you just kind of fall into jobs or did you choose your work? Did your work fully utilize your strengths? What parts of you can be more realized in retirement than in work? If you were just starting out and you could choose any profession, what would it be? What has and has not changed for LGBT people in the workplace? September 10: What does your heart desire?Let’s share our dreams and yearnings, for we do still have them. Let’s support each other in going for them and determining next steps. Leon Brown, who served 30 years on death row in North Carolina before being exonerated by DNA evidence, has said: “Become the person you were meant to be, light your inner fire and follow your heart’s desire.” It’s not too late for hopes. That inner fire can see us through these difficult times. Check-in Mondays7 to 8 pm We catch up with each other on how we’re doing and have unstructured conversations focused on listening. |

Hair Salons, Barbershops and Malls May Open Today in SoCo
Sonoma County will allow barbershops, hair salons and shopping malls to resume indoor operations with modifications on Monday, county health officials said Sunday.
They are taking the action in accordance with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s new business reopening strategy amid the coronavirus pandemic, local officials said. The county’s move also will coincide with the state’s beginning of a four-stage process to determine how and when California’s 58 counties will continue to proceed during the pandemic with local resumption of commercial and public activities.
